Malta’s mild climate and Mediterranean landscape make it a visitor favourite all year round. Not only is it one of Europe’s most-visited countries during the summer months—it makes for a great winter destination too.

February is the ideal month to visit. Despite being colder compared to the rest of the year, you’ll still get a fair share of sunshine. This means that it’s usually nice enough to enjoy some outdoor activities, and quiet enough to do all the indoor activities without any crowds.

Weather in Malta in February

February is one of Malta’s coldest months, with temperatures ranging from an average of 9-16°C, while the average sea temperature is around 16ºC. Its humid climate means you can expect these temperatures to feel colder, though.

So, pack some warm clothes and jackets!

You can expect rain for more or less 12 days during this month. There are 11 hours of daylight, six of which are sunshine each day. The sun sets at around 5:30 pm.

In short, if you’re visiting Malta in February, pack your sunglasses and your umbrella. You’ll probably need a mix of both during your stay!

Malta in February: Things to do

February might be a short month. However, it hosts a calendar packed with events in Malta!

These include Valentine’s Day and Carnival celebrations and all-year classic activities, without the crowds expected in summer.

Here are some of the unmissable activities for an unforgettable holiday in Malta in February.

Valentine’s Day

Whether you’re visiting the island with your significant other or not—Valentine’s day is a great excuse to celebrate love.

How you do this depends on your likes and interests. The good news is that Malta will have you covered regardless of your preference for spending this love-filled day.

For instance, you can enjoy a lovely meal in one of Malta’s top restaurants, or plan a romantic date in one of its many quaint trattorias.

Go on a walk in the island’s most romantic city, Valletta, and stop for a drink or coffee in one of its charming cafes and bars.

Alternatively, plan a night out in Malta’s party capital, Paceville, and spend the night bar hopping along Sliema’s lively promenade.

Whichever way you choose to spend Valentine’s Day, you’re definitely in for a day (or night) to remember!

Carnival

February in Malta means Carnival celebrations. During the five days before lent, Carnival celebrations take over the island’s streets and squares.

Calendars are bursting with events and celebrations, including colourful costumes and fun-filled festivities.

The centre of most of the party is Valletta. Watch as the city is filled with excitement and merriness, with people dressed in all kinds of costumes. Not to mention the unique floats that parade through the city, most of which have satirical themes.

Malta’s sister island, Gozo, also hosts its carnival in Nadur. Here the celebrations take a wilder twist, as it’s an entirely spontaneous event. Locals go to great lengths to devise their unique costumes, most of which are grotesque, satirical, or just plain funny.

You’ll also find various parties hosted around both island’s clubs and bars. Joining the celebrations is a must if you want to experience the local life in Malta!

Indoor activities

There are plenty of indoor activities in Malta, especially on rainy days.

If you’re a history lover, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to visiting ancient sites in Malta. These include the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, Domvs Romana, Catacombs, and Għar Dalam Cave and Museum.

On the other hand, if you’re an art lover then don’t miss St. John’s Co-Cathedral, which houses works by Caravaggio! If you’re into contemporary art, you’ll want to visit MUZA, as well as the Blitz art gallery in Valletta.

Similarly, you’ll find a great choice of museums to immerse yourself in Malta’s history as well. These include the National War Museum, Lascaris War Rooms, and Casa Rocca Piccola.

If you’re visiting with children, you need to add the National Aquarium and Playmobil Funpark to your itinerary. Children, and children at heart, are sure to love both attractions!

Outdoor activities

Weather permitting, there’s no better way to enjoy life in Malta than to spend your day exploring the island’s many sites and attractions.

Here, the outdoor activities you can enjoy in Malta in winter are endless!

These include hiking, walking tours, cruises, strolls on the beach, outdoor lunches, picnics, and more.

Strolling around Valletta, you can learn more about the island’s history and taste what everyday life in Malta is like.

Similarly, get lost in the many alleys and picturesque streets as you walk around the island’s old capital city, Mdina.
